This program introduces students at all levels to the core principles of Christian missions. Through an examination of biblical and theological foundations paired with a historical overview, students learn the strategic concerns shaping the future of global mission work. Drawing inspiration from 1 Corinthians 9:22b (“I have become all things to all men…”), the course emphasizes that every Christian is called to participate in making disciples across all cultures. By exploring the biblical basis for missions and the evolution of missionary movements, students develop a God-centered approach that informs practical ministry strategies.

THINKING (KNOWLEDGE)
This course is an Introduction to Christian Missions as the response of the church to the world. It is to enable the student to understand the importance of Christian missions based on Biblical Theology through careful studies and apply it in the personal and ministerial dimension of his/her life. It is to interact with a number of thinkers in the area of the Biblical theology of Missions. Acquire knowledge to develop personal contributions in Biblical rationale for the missionary activity of the church. To gain a deeper historical perspective of the current missionary activity of the church.
EXPERIENCE (SKILLS)
The course maintains an overall aim to enable the student to engage in Christian missions properly for the ministry of the church and develop essential skills to read, listen, watch (multimedia and digital resources technology) and observe mission activities based on Biblical theology parallel with the current church practices.
Evaluate current Christian Missions in light of Biblical Theology
Contribute to and participate in Christian Missions meaningfully to revitalize and execute effective ministry in practice.
RELATIONAL (ATTITUDE & BEHAVIOUR)
The course expects:
- To help the student consider the Biblical Theology of missions as significant for living.
- It challenges and imparts to the student’s relational, behavioral, moral, and ethical values deriving from Bible-based models and demonstrates them in his/her interpersonal and public life.
- Give increasing value to the global Christian Mission and work towards it based on Biblical Theology
Enhance awareness on developing the right attitude in practical ministry that is Biblically and Theologically grounded.
- Distinguish holistic mission based on Bible
- Advance a broader appreciation of the wide variety of Christian mission assistances
SPIRITUALITY (DEVOTION & PASSION)
The course expects the students:
- To develop devotion to the mission of God.
This course encourages students to engage in spirituality that will bring an ability to move the church towards God and develop a passion for righteousness, truth, and justice relevant to the context
- The course is developed based on proper Biblical knowledge, and guidance of the Holy Spirit to the proper execution in the context.
Finally, students will gain insight into identifying and fulfilling their personal
role in the Great Commission.
RELATIONSHIP TO GSAT’S MISSION
GSAT desires to prepare leaders for Christian life and ministry which embraces the Great
Commission in a way that equips students to bring the knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ to
their communities and beyond. This course will promote personal and spiritual growth through
applying the Great Commission in prayer, an introduction to basic models of missions, awareness
of cultural patterns and values, and approaches to evangelism.
Areas of competency development apply to this course:
Disciple Maker (DM) – witnesses for Jesus Christ, demonstrates global awareness and
- missionary need, teaches and mentors others to become competent Kingdom leaders.
- Ministry Developer (MD) – aware of key ministry models, develops strategies for healthy
- church practices and programs.
- Spiritually Mature (SM) – models a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ, practices core
- spiritual disciplines, uses spiritual gifts in ministry, committed to lifelong Christ-like
Contextually Aware
- student should be able to demonstrates a healthy view of self, discerns social and
cultural patterns, ascribes to a Christian/biblically informed view of the world, and practices appropriate ways to engage culture.
Essential Elements of Competency Development
In order to meet a level of competency, each student will be assessed on his/her ability to:
- Act redemptively to transform all aspects of reality including physical, emotional and spiritual; personal and corporate.
- Differentiate between divine and human responsibility and act appropriately. (SM)
- Display awareness of the needs of the culture and prevailing worldviews around them both on the local and global level. This awareness is accompanied by tangible action to extend grace and bring hope.
- Model an authentic Christian experience that demonstrates full devotion to Jesus Christ, is appealing to observers, and creates relational thirst. Prioritize time to allow for meaningful dialog.
- Recognize major differences separating the main world-wide religions and clearly define the essential Christian doctrines to share in loving, humble, and non-confrontational ways.
- Equip others with appropriate resources, counsel and knowledge. (DM)
- Encourage others with reminders of eternal perspectives and biblical worldview. (MD)
- Identify the major components in contemporary Canadian world-view, values, and beliefs.
- Identify the major socio-religious barriers in missions, andlearn how to overcome these in practical inviting ways.
- To identify the major elements, values and structures in a Christian “counter-culture”, and to be able to illustrate places of congruency and divergence from those of the prevalent secular culture.
- To identify the various hindrances to conducting “domestic missions” in around the world, and how to over-come these in redemptive ways.
- To learn how to build “bridges” with elements in both the general diverse cultures, also in order to make an effective gospel presentation.
- To learn to do “cultural triage” to learn and discern what elements in a given culture are positive, which are “neutral” and which are detrimental to the gospel.
- To learn how to reach from one culture to another with the fulfillment that only the gospel brings, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
In order to help fulfill the Great Commission, the students, by the end of the course, should:
- Be able to apply their knowledge and comprehension of the biblical, theological, historical, and
cultural foundations of Christian Missions to the process of mobilizing the church for missions.
- Develop a church missions strategy based on partnership with Christian mission organizations.
- Value strategic concerns affecting the future of missions.
- Be able to accomplish the following:
- a) Participate in a volunteer missions experience.
- b) Advocate missions among the body of Christ in African and by extension around the world.
Course Teaching Methodology
The course will involve the following methodologies:
Hybrid LMS teaching methods will be utilized such as online class presentations by the professor using, audio lectures, Power Point and handouts. Other teaching methods include small and large group discussion, multi-media presentations, utilization of missions related websites, and other communication mediums.
A Canvas shell for the class will be utilized extensively as a resource for students. Students will be expected to be thoroughly prepared for class discussions through readings and the assigned Canvas readings.
NOTE: All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period unless otherwise noted. Late assignments will negatively impact grades. Assignments turned in late will receive an automatic point deduction.
ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE.
